Made from the bark of the Birch tree, Birch Tar essential oil has a smoky, woody aroma, slightly reminiscent of tar. It is often compared to the smoke of a campfire. It is slowly steam distilled from the bark of the birch tree.
Birch tar oil has strong antiseptic properties owing to a large amount of phenol derivatives and terpenoid derivatives. It is widely used in perfumery as a base note to impart leather, tar, smoky, and wintergreen notes.
It is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and an effective analgesic. It makes an effective insect repellant and insecticide.
